You are invited to Lightforms Art Center (743 Columbia Street, Hudson, NY 12534) for an evolving exhibition that is activated with community and taking place throughout the month of June. Through Friday, June 30th, all are welcome to view “Who We Be! A Celebration of Black Life in Columbia County through the Cosmic Web.” Gallery hours are as follows:

Fridays 3 – 7 pm
Saturdays 11 am – 5 pm
Sundays 11 am – 5 pm

It’s starting to feel like summer! ☀️🐄🌾 After a few weeks back on fresh pasture, the herd is as happy as ever. If you’re planning a visit to the farm, we recommend coming between 2-3pm to catch the ladies and their little ones on their walk back to the barn.

This spring seems to be a particularly great year

This spring seems to be a particularly great year for the "Gaywings" (Polygola paucifolia) at Hawthorne Valley. Their common name refers to their bright pink color and "happy" wing-like petals. These little flowers are found in our low-lying, floodplain forest behind the school, where occasional flooding deposits sediment and nutrients that enrich the soil, creating a bountiful habitat for spring wildflowers.

Did you know that since 1972 more than 24,000 children have spent a week or more living and working on Hawthorne Valley Farm through our Visiting Students Program and Summer Camps? We welcome new and returning campers, with one of our most loved summer camp sessions being the two-week-long Farm Explorers Camp. Here, children ages 9-12 have daily opportunities to get their hands dirty helping out on the Farm by feeding and caring for our sheep, horses, chickens, and pigs. They also collect fresh eggs, groom and milk a cow, and try horseback riding. In the garden, Farm Explorers harvest fresh, organic herbs and veggies used in our kitchen that they then enjoy during mealtime with other campers and counselors in the dining hall. Campers participate in traditional camp activities, too, like swimming in our pond, creating arts and crafts, playing games, and making music. During their stay at Hawthorne Valley, Farm Explorers live in our sprawling 200-year-old farmhouse, the Main House.

The Makers Market is back! Hawthorne Valley’s Ma

The Makers Market is back! Hawthorne Valley’s Makers Market features products made by artisans and crafters who also just happen to work at Hawthorne Valley. This month’s market will feature a wide selection of products including clothing, decorations, jewelry, toys, baked goods, beauty products, and more.

Markets will take place from 11 am – 3 pm on May 27, June 10, July 1, August 12, September 2, and October 7, outside of the Farm Store under the pavilion in addition to a few pop-up tents. We hope to see you there!

Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School’s 9th Grade Clas

Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School’s 9th Grade Class is hard at work on a multi week cabin construction project that will benefit our overnight summer campers. These cabins will house the Earth Stewards Campers and will be tech-free social centers for campers when they are not partaking in apprenticeships, relaxing at the pond, making crafts, or exploring our forests.

This week, visiting students from @steinerschoolny had the opportunity to partake in this unique learning experience under the guidance of Mr. Sklare. The students learned how to properly measure, cut, and identify knots in the wood.

Join Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School (HVS) and Jan Goeschel for "Education for the 21st Century: Creating Resonant Spaces for Embodied Learning" on Tuesday, May 30th at 7 pm in the HVS Music Room.

This presentation is the first in a series brought to you by The Hickory Program - Integrated Holistic Education Support at Hawthorne Valley School.

Waldorf education was born in the beginning of the 20th Century in response to the social crises of the years between the two World Wars in Central Europe. It grew out of anthroposophy, which could be described as a path of self-education for adults that also tries to address the social needs of the time. Today, we are in a different situation, globally and in our various local contexts - and yet, there are many echoes of this seemingly fragile state.

In his talk, Jan Goeschel will address some essential questions:

How do we create an education that addresses the needs of today?

What kind of inner development is needed so that we can be effective in social and cultural transformation?

Jan Goeschel is the founding president of the Camphill Academy, a higher education and professional training organization embedded in the Camphill Movement. He is also a member of the leadership team of the Anthroposophic Council for Inclusive Social Development at the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland. He is trained as a Waldorf and special education teacher and curative educator and holds degrees in psychology and education, as well as a PhD in special education and rehabilitation sciences.
