Full-Time Baker

The mission of Hawthorne Valley Bakery is to provide the highest quality biodynamic and organic food to the community at reasonable prices and in a profitable manner; in so doing the bakery will support the ongoing mission of Hawthorne Valley Farm and Association (Education, Arts, and Agriculture).

Each staff member is asked to help maintain the bakery as an ethical and positive place to work. In addition the Hawthorne Valley Bakery is committed to being an educational resource to the community on ecological, environmental and food related issues.

PURPOSE:
To assist the bakery operations supervisor and co-workers in the production of products to meet sales, margin and labor goals.

REPORTS TO:
Reports to Bakery Operations Supervisor

RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Bread production including mixing, caring for pre-ferments, scaling, kneading and
shaping, proofing and baking of dough’s as well as milling of grains.
● Producer of laminated products
● Proficiency at pastry cart set up
● A capability to produce all bakery formulas
● Participate in lot tracking and stocking of inventory including flours and grains
● Participate in packing and invoicing orders
● Participate in cleaning, maintaining and sanitation of equipment and work spaces
● Participate in educational endeavors that support Hawthorne Valley Farm missions

GENERAL
● Attend department meetings
● Perform other tasks assigned by Bakery Operations Supervisor or designated staff
trainer

QUALIFICATIONS
● Well-organized, pays attention to detail
● Demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments
● Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands
● Ability to do manual work in a production environment, be able to lift 50lbs., move pallets
with a pallet jack, stand for an 8 hour shift
● Good communication skills
● Regular, predictable attendance
● Willingness and ability to learn and grow to meet the changing requirements of the job
● Professional baking experience, or a culinary degree in Baking and Pastry Arts preferred

COMPENSATION
● Salary commensurate with experience

$16-20, day shifts beginning at 4am-noon.

Floor Staff

PURPOSE: To provide prompt, friendly, helpful customer service and maintain the store in clean, full-stocked, orderly condition.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

I. CASHIERING 

  •  Greet customers, smiling and making eye contact.
  •  Become familiar with Farm Store policies and products in order to answer customer questions. Refer unresolved questions or problems to Shift Supervisor or other appropriate staff.
  •  Check out customer purchases quickly and accurately, using correct prices and departments.
  •  Call for back-up as needed so that customers wait as little as possible to be checked out.
  •  Bag customer purchases as needed and ask customers if they need assistance.
  •  Open and close out registers following established procedures. Balance cash drawer at end of shift.
  •  Maintain front end in clean, orderly condition.
  •  Answer and route phone calls, take and route messages as needed.
  •  Alert Shift Supervisor to potential shoplifters, disorderly customers or other emergencies.

 

II. STOCKING 

  •  Assist customers with product questions, in prompt, friendly, courteous manner, referring them to other staff when necessary.
  •  Offer suggestions for purchases and ways to prepare products.
  •  Help customers place special orders.
  •  Stock displays fully without overcrowding; face items on shelves.
  •  Rotate older stock to front, making space for new stock.
  •  Pull short-date or low-quality items and follow established procedures for recording and disposing.
  •  Label items accurately with price tags or signs. Report price discrepancies to buyers.
  •  Notify buyers of out-of-stocks.
  •  Help with receiving deliveries and rotate overstock into back stock.
  •  Stock produce and close it for the night as needed.
  •  Clean up spills, remove trash promptly, sweep and mop floor.
  •  Use equipment safely. Monitor cooler and freezer temperatures. Advise Shift Supervisor of equipment problems.
  •  Participate in periodic inventory counts.

III. OTHER DUTIES 

  •  Attend all-staff and department meetings.
  •  Consistently report to work on time, starting tasks at the beginning of scheduled shift.
  •  Perform other tasks assigned by Shift Supervisor.

Cashier

Hawthorne Valley Farm Store is looking for a reliable candidate to fill a part time (appx 28 hrs/week) Cashier/Floor Staff opening. The Cashier’s primary role is to provide prompt, friendly, helpful customer service.  Part-time employees receive paid sick leave and a 10% discount at the Farm Store.

The regular shift for this opening is 1pm-7:30pm, flexibility with which days, however some weekend shifts required.  This is a part-time non-exempt position with a starting hourly pay rate between $16-$17/hour.

Produce Stocker

Hawthorne Valley Farm Store is looking to fill a Produce Stocker position. If you are looking to keep busy and active while maintaining a fairly regular work schedule, but not looking for a full-time work commitment, this may be the job for you! Part time employees receive a 10% discount at our Farm Store.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist customers with produce questions and special orders
  • Display fruits and vegetables to show abundance and quality while maintaining proper storage conditions
  • Replenish and rotate displays, culling several times daily, and following stocking priorities set by Produce Buyer
  • Trim, wash, bundle produce, following priorities set by Produce Buyer
  • Dispose of damaged or spoiled goods promptly, with appropriate notification to Produce Buyer
  • Remove trash, clean cases and keep prep and storage areas in clean, orderly condition.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Organized, accurate with details
  • Ability to stand for long periods
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Regular, predictable attendance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with or interest in natural foods and produce
  • Customer service experience

The current shift opening for this position are:

  • Wednesdays 11am-7pm
  • Thursdays 11am-7pm
  • Saturdays 6am-2pm
